Shelburne’s Boxing Rock wins national Brewery of the Year prize

A Shelburne-based brewery took home the top prize at the Canadian Brewing Awards this weekend.

The accomplishment marks over a decade since an Atlantic Canadian company won the Canadian Brewing Awards Brewery of the Year Award.

Boxing Rock co-founder and head brewer Henry Pedro is particularly proud of the big win.

Attending the gala in Hamilton, Ontario on Saturday, he notes the prize came after three of Boxing Rock’s beers won gold medals.

“We didn’t take the time to do special odd entries,” Pedro tells CityNews Halifax. “We just took whatever we made every single day, shipped it off and we got three gold medals.”

He credits the Boxing Rock staff, adding the award shows that he “has the best staff in the country making the best beer.”

Since starting up in 2013, Boxing Rock has won several awards and expanded into Halifax with a location at the Local Source Market on Windsor Street.

Up against some 800 breweries nationwide, winning the top brewery prize in Canada is a widely recognized symbol of excellence.
