Province announces pallet shelter for seniors, housing options for Black Nova Scotians in Dartmouth

The provincial government announced more housing options for people experiencing homelessness on Tuesday.

Two sites will help transition people to permanent housing and better equip them with culturally sensitive support.

The first site is set to open in Westphal and will provide 35 spaces for Black and African Nova Scotians, the province said.

The government is providing $2.3 million for operating costs and 902ManUp, a violence advocacy organization, will be providing services.

Officials also announced the location of a new pallet shelter village. It says 41 units will be built at 35 Atlantic St., specifically for seniors experiencing homelessness.

The not-for-profit group, Quest, will be offering support there, and wraparound services like meals and transportation.

Halifax Council is expected to discuss the issue of homelessness at a meeting on Tuesday, as staff says designated encampments in the municipality are well beyond capacity.
