Two people exposed to carbon monoxide at Halifax construction site

An area of Halifax’s north end was closed off to the public on Thursday morning after a gas leak.

According to Halifax Fire and Emergency, crews were called to complaints of people having difficulty breathing at a building under construction at the corner of Gottingen and Bilby streets just before 10 a.m.

Deputy chief Dave Meldrum told CityNews two people were exposed to carbon monoxide at the site and were treated by paramedics.

“Our firefighters believe that a water pump in a lower level of the building under construction may have been the source of the carbon monoxide,” Meldrum said.

Fire crews ventilated the building and used handheld detectors to check for toxic gases.

Halifax Fire left the scene just after 12:30 p.m. and turned over the investigation to the provincial department of labour.
