N.S. police watchdog looking into incident in Cape Breton

By CityNews Halifax Staff

An investigation is underway by Nova Scotia’s police watchdog after a man was left with serious facial injuries and a broken elbow during an arrest.

According to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT ), the investigation stems from an incident that occurred in Cape Breton.

SiRT said it was contacted by Cape Breton Regional Police on July 24 about the incident where they say officers were watching the man as part of an ongoing investigation.

However, after finding him in a vehicle on a dead-end street, a struggle took place during an arrest, resulting in the alleged injuries.

Due to the serious injuries sustained by the male, SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation.

SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer in Nova Scotia.
