Halifax Public Libraries closed after breakdown in labour discussions

Library staff in the Halifax Regional Municipality are the next workers to hit the picket line.

It comes after talks broke down between the Halifax Public Library management and the union representing 340 staff members this weekend.

In a release, the Halifax Public Library said people can expect branches and services to be closed this morning after the strike deadline passed at midnight.

Programs at libraries will also be cancelled but all loans will be extended with materials due once library service resumes, without fines or fees on items that are overdue.

Staff looking for wage increases, better provisions surrounding sick leave among other issues and the union has been in conciliation talks with management since October.
