More than 28K students in Halifax area to receive free transit passes

By Mark Hodgins

The province and the Halifax Regional Municipality announced free transit passes for junior high and high school students in the area.

The free passes will be available to all students in grades 7 to 12 in the Halifax Regional Centre for Education and CSAP.

“Through the Student Transit Pass Pilot Program, we are making life more affordable for families,” said Becky Druhan, Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development. “The program gives students the independence to travel to and from school, as well as explore and learn about their community. And it promotes sustainability by getting students familiar with the public transit system.”

Government says the program, which comes at a cost of $1.2 million from the province and $600,000 from Halifax, will see more than 28,000 students receive passes.

Since 2021, the province had been running a pilot program of free transit passes at 10 schools.
