Mooseheads losing streak extended to 5 games after OT loss on the road in Rouyn-Noranda

The Halifax Mooseheads continued their second road trip of the season on Saturday night facing the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.

The Moose chased the game almost from the outset when Logan Crosby was sent to the penalty box just 1:33 into the 1st period on a double-minor penalty for high sticking.  The Huskies would make the Mooseheads pay, with Lars Steiner scoring on that powerplay to take a one-goal lead.  Halifax netminder Matthis Rousseau was the busier of the two goalies in the first period, with the Huskies firing 18 shots at the Herd’s net in the opening frame, but the period would end with Rouyen up 1-0.

Halifax would tie up the contest early in the 2nd period.  Logan Crosby notched his 4th goal of the season, beating Huskies goaltender Samuel Meloche at the 2:04 mark, making the score 1-1; Lincoln Waugh and Liam Kilfoil assisted on the goal. Rouyen took the lead at 5:58, with William Vezina credited with the goal, the first of his QMHJL career.  The on-ice officials initially waved off the goal, but after a video review, the goal was counted. The delay during the review didn’t appear to phase the Mooseheads. Less than a minute later, Jan Sprynar quieted the crowd at Aréna Glencore when he tied the game for the Herd, burying a feed from Shawn Carrier and Owen Phillips at 6:49. The Mooseheads showing no quit in this contest, with Liam Kilfoil sliding a rebound behind Meloche tieing the game at 3 with less than 2 minutes to go.  Carlos Handel and Lou Levesque with the assists on the game-tying goal.

The Moosehead’s luck would run out in the overtime period, with Antonin Verreault beating Rousseau at 2:20 of the extra period to send the home fans home happy, and the Mooseheads staring at a 5th straight loss.

Rouyn-Noranda fired 46 shots at Mathis Rousseau during the contest, and the Mooseheads managed 18 shots on the night.

The Huskies swept the three-star selections on the night, with Antonin Verreault taking 1st star honours. 

The Mooseheads’ record falls to 8-10-3-0, while the Huskies improve their record to 13-3-2-3. The Moose will return to action on Sunday as they visit Val-d’Or to face the Foreurs. Game time is 3 o’clock, and you can catch all of the action on 95.7 News Radio.
