The Halifax Mooseheads were back in action Friday night, travelling to Cape Breton to take on the Eagles at the Centre 200. Halifax is coming off a 4-0 home loss to the Shawinigan Cataractes and looking to earn a crucial win over their provincial rival Cape Breton.
Halifax trailed early as Luke Patterson opened the scoring for the Eagles only 2:11 into the first period. Officials briefly reviewed the goal before being allowed. Halifax native Jacob Hartlin scored his first QMJHL goal for the Eagles only 5 minutes later, giving Cape Breton an early two-goal lead.
Antoine Fontaine cut the Eagles’ lead in half on the powerplay. Jack Martin fired a shot from the point, hitting a body in front, and Fontaine fired the loose puck past the Eagles’ netminder.
Jacob Hartlin responded with his second of the night only two minutes after Halifax’s goal to restore Cape Bretons’ two-goal lead. The play was reviewed, and for the second time of the night, the review allowed the Eagles’ goal.
Thomas Lavoie pushed the Eagles lead to three early in the second period assisted by Nova Scotia’s Cole Burbidge and Joseph Henneberry. Another Nova Scotian kept the onslaught going for Cape Breton, Jacob Newcombe netting one past Mathis Rousseau 10:05 into the period to increase the Eagles lead to four.
The Herd swapped goaltenders after Newcombe’s goal, with Jack Milner entering the game.
Alexis Toussaint continued the Eagles scoring ways into the third period. Luke Patterson forced a turnover from Mooseheads defenceman Carlos Handel and found Alexis Toussaint to add to the Cape Breton lead. Joseph Henneberry scored his second of the night, adding to the dominating lead for the Eagles with 7 minutes left in the final period of action.
Logan Crosby scored the Herd’s second goal of the game on the powerplay. Lou Levesque drove to the net and left the puck for Crosby to bury past the Cape Breton goaltender. Halifax scored again with less than a minute left, with Liam Kilfoil tipping Dominic MacKenzie’s shot into the Eagles’ net.
