Certain Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC oysters recalled due to possible norovirus

Canada’s public health agency has issued a recall for a certain brand of oysters due to possible norovirus contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency recall affects Taylor Shellfish Canada ULC Fanny Bay Oysters, Sunseeker Oysters, and Cloudy Bay Oysters which were sold or distributed in Alberta, B.C. and Ontario.

“This recall was triggered by findings by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak,” the agency said in a release on Saturday.

The BC Centre for Disease Control is currently investigating 64 cases of gastrointestinal illness following the consumption of raw oysters in that province between November 1 and December 18.

The agency says the recalled products should not be consumed, served, sold, or distributed adding they should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a similar recall across seven states following a similar norovirus outbreak.

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes gastroenteritis, which is the inflammation of the stomach and intestines. This can lead to symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach pain, which usually begin 12 to 48 hours after exposure to the virus and last for 1 to 3 days.
