On Thursday, the Mooseheads played host to Luke Woodworth and the Drummondville Voltigeurs, reigning league champions, for the two teams’ first matchup of the season. This is the first game for the Herd since the trade deadline, which saw the trade acquisitions of Callum Aucoin and Jacob Steinman, the signing of William Bent, and the departure of Mathis Rousseau, Logan Crosby, Jake Todd, and Jack Milner.
The teams traded goals in the first period. Drummondville struck first as Ethan Gauthier buried a feed from Luke Woodworth on the powerplay only five minutes into the game. The Herd tied the contest 10 minutes later as Quinn Kennedy scored his first at the Scotiabank Centre from the left-wing faceoff circle on the powerplay. He beat Riley Mercer, assisted by Carlos Handel and Shawn Carrier.
The Mooseheads started the second period with a goal as Antoine Fontaine beat Mercer on the high blocker side off the faceoff just one minute into the period. Sam Oliver scored the Voltigeur’s second powerplay goal, ripping a show past Steinman for his league-leading 33rd goal of the season with five minutes remaining. Liam Kilfoil responded, tipping home a net-front pass by Kennedy for his 12th of the season also on the powerplay to give the Herd the lead heading into the third period.
Drummondville scored two in the first half of the third period. Justin Larose opened the scoring for the Voltigeur on the powerplay, knocking the puck past Steinman to tie the contest at three. Oliver added his second of the game at the 10:42 mark, which ended up being the game-winning goal for Drummondville.
With the loss, the Herd falls to 11-21-5 while still looking for their first win of 2025; the Voltigeurs improve to 27-8-4.
Voltigeurs captain Luke Woodworth earned the first star with three assists in the Drummondville win. Halifax was awarded the other two stars: Quinn Kennedy earned the second star with a goal and assists, and Jacob Steinman captured the third star with 41 saves in the game.
The Mooseheads will have Friday off before hosting the Seadogs at the Scotiabank Centre on Saturday for the first in a home-and-home weekend series with Saint John.
