Death in Centreville fire was the result of intimate partner violence: Police

The Southwest Nova RCMP major crime unit charged a Centreville man with second-degree murder in connection with a weekend fire.

Police are also confirming the death of a woman found in the charred debris of a house was the result of intimate partner violence.

Officials say Kentville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a structure fire on Anthony Avenue in Centreville around 3 a.m. on Jan. 11.

Six people were able to get out of the house, and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. A 22-year-old woman was found deceased in the home.

RCMP say the woman’s death was the result of homicide and intimate partner violence.

Police say 28-year-old Justin Joseph Benjamin was arrested on Saturday and charged Sunday with murder and arson with disregard for human life.

He is expected to appear in Kentville provincial court this morning.

RCMP said that the investigation is continuing.
