One of Canada’s greatest champions and the pride of Cole Harbour will once again lead the way at an international tournament.
Sidney Crosby will wear the captain’s ‘C’ for Team Canada at the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off.
It will be the fourth time Crosby has captained Canada at a best-on-best tournament, a run that includes gold medal wins at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics and a championship victory at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar will serve as assistant captains.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to again represent Canada on the international stage, and it is an honour to be named captain for the 4 Nations Face-Off on a team with so many great leaders,” Crosby said Thursday in a Hockey Canada release. “I look forward to serving as captain alongside Connor and Cale who are amazing leaders in their own right. All of us are excited to wear the Team Canada jersey and to kick off the 4 Nations Face-Off in front of Canadian fans.”
Crosby is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Hart Trophy winner. This season, his 20th in the NHL, he crossed the 600-goal mark and moved into ninth all-time in total points. He has 54 points in 53 games this season, the 18th time he has scored 50 points in a season in his career.
McDavid is leading the next wave of Canadian superstars while scoring at rates not seen this century. Now in his 10th season, he is on pace to cross the 100-point mark for the eighth time. Earlier this year, McDavid became the fourth-fastest and fourth-youngest player in NHL history to score 1,000 points.
Makar already has a Hall of Fame resume at age 26. That list of accomplishments includes a Stanley Cup, the Conn Smythe Trophy, the Norris Trophy and the Calder Trophy.
“Sidney, Connor and Cale all possess exceptional leadership qualities, a determination to be the best and a burning desire to win,” head coach Jon Cooper said. “We are fortunate to have incredible leadership on our team. These players will lead Canada with pride as we set out to accomplish our goal of winning the 4 Nations Face-Off.”
The 4 Nations Face-Off will see Finland, Sweden, Canada and the United States compete in hockey’s first best-on-best tournament since 2016.
The event will run Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and Boston on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.
