Cape Breton MP Jaime Battiste has withdrawn from the federal Liberal leadership contest.
In a statement posted to his social media yesterday, the member for Sydney-Victoria said that after careful consideration and many discussions, he has decided that the best way forward is to drop out of the race and support Mark Carney’s bid.
Officially joining the race last week, Battiste was the only Indigenous person on the ballot to replace Justin Trudeau as leader of the party and as prime minister.
Battiste thanked his supporters, Indigenous leaders, friends and family and said that he is looking forward to working with Carney
There is no word on whether Battiste will join Mark Carney as the front-runner stops in Halifax this morning.
Carney will be in the city to make an announcement along with Liberal MPs Kody Blois and Sean Fraser.
No details on a location for the announcement have been released.
