New temporary shelter opens at Halifax church

A new temporary shelter opened at St. Patrick’s church in Halifax on Friday.

The province said the Brunswick Street shelter comes with 25 beds for people experiencing homelessness, adding it will offer a safe, warm space, providing critical support during extreme weather events and will stay open until at least August.

“We know that winter is an especially difficult time for those without stable housing,” said Scott Armstrong, Minister of Opportunities and Social Development. “By opening this space, we are ensuring that more people have access to warmth, safety and essential support services.”

According to the province, the shelter is for men and currently accommodates 25 people, with capacity to expand to 40.

The government is investing about $1.1 million in the shelter, with Souls Harbour Rescue Mission providing staff, meals and wraparound services.
