Screen Nova Scotia purchased a soundstage facility to help grow the province’s “thriving” film industry.
In a press release officials say the government invested $8 million in the soundstage, which is a large sound-proofed building used for filming. This is said to increase the industry’s capacity and allow productions to film year round.
“Film and television production is booming in our province. We’re committed to fuelling that success, which creates high-value jobs and drives economic growth,” Premier Tim Houston said in the release. “By investing in the right infrastructure, we will help unlock the full potential of our film industry and show the world what Nova Scotia has to offer.”
The facility has many supports for productions including two clear-span soundstages and an area for offices. Uniquely, the 20-acre property also has an equestrian centre that could be turned into an additional stage. The province also notes the “abundance” of land will help support growth into the future.
Screen Nova Scotia explored multiple properties since the funding was announced in 2022. It wasn’t until the summer of 2024 when the area was found. A process to get it ready for filming started immediately with a press release noting it will be opening late summer or early fall this year.
“Our community is thrilled to welcome this world-class production facility right in our backyard. Films provide us with entertainment, but they also create jobs and bring a boost to local businesses,” Brad Johns, MLA for Sackville-Uniacke, said.
The province is hoping the soundstage will be a “major tool” in keeping jobs and films year round and also attracting international development.
