Mooseheads comeback, take game 1 against Voltigeurs

A third-period comeback powered the Halifax Mooseheads to a 3-2 victory over the Drummondville Voltigeurs, taking game one of their playoff series in Drummondville.

The first period ended scoreless, but at the beginning of the second period, Luke Woodworth scored up close off a behind the net pass from Jesse Allecia to give Drummondville the lead heading into the third period.

Ethan Gauthier added another for the Voltigeurs in the first half of the third, finishing a pass from Sam Oliver off a Mooseheads turnover.

The Mooseheads then went on to score three unanswered. Carlos Handel firing a shot on the Drummondville goal off the faceoff, Louis-Félix Charrois made the initial save for the Volts but Antoine Fontaine buried the rebound for the Herd.

Three minutes later, Mooseheads rookie Caylen Blake tied the contest, firing a laser from the right faceoff circle, past Charrois. Then, with less than five minutes remaining in the game, Quinn Kennedy scored off an assist from Owen Phillips to secure game one for the Mooseheads in dramatic fashion.

With the win the Herd have a 1-0 series lead over the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

Quinn Kennedy earned first star of the contest, scoring the game-winning goal for the Herd. Jacob Steinman was awarded second star with 33 saves in the win, while Luke Woodworth earned third star with a goal for the Voltigeurs.

The win came at a cost, as both Justin Chiras and Will Bent left the game with upper body injuries.

Halifax and Drummondville will be back in action Saturday, Mar 29 as the Herd look to take a 2-0 series lead. Puck drop is at 8 p.m., and you can catch all the action here on 95.7 NewsRadio.
