Some savings are on the horizon this week, as the consumer carbon tax is set to be removed Tuesday, just as Nova Scotia’s HST reduction comes into effect.
After much ado, the federal carbon price, known as the carbon tax, will end on April 1.
That change is expected to drop the price for a litre of gas in Nova Scotia. However, on Friday, the Utility and Review Board issued a letter saying it plans to bring in a mechanism to provide “short-term relief” to gas retailers who paid the carbon tax on inventory they have, and won’t be able to recoup that cost.
It’s not clear what that mechanism will look like.
The end of the carbon tax also means the quarterly rebate cheques will become a thing of the past, with the final payment expected to be sent out in April.
Also this week, the provincial government’s promised HST reduction will take effect.
The province is reducing the provincial portion of the harmonized sales tax from 10 percent to nine percent, meaning the overall HST will drop from 15 percent to 14 percent.
