Snow, ice pellets on the way for Halifax region

It seems winter isn’t done with Nova Scotia just yet.

Tuesday’s forecast for Halifax is calling for up to 5 centimetres of snow mixed with ice pellets throughout the day. Another 2 to 4 cm is expected tonight, creating messy driving conditions for commuters.

Allister Aalders, 95.7’s weather specialist, says snowfall amounts that actually accumulate on the ground are difficult to predict and will vary depending on the surface they fall on.

“In terms of the snowfall today and tonight it’s really tricky to predict because we’re doing to see melting on contact,” he said.

Snow falling on pavement versus grass could vary the amount of accumulation. Aalders believes that on grassy surfaces, accumulation could be between 3 to 7 cm, depending on the area, so “plan for slushy conditions,” he said.

The high for Thursday is 6 C, so nothing is sticking around that we do accumulate.”

Environment Canada says winds will pick up throughout the day, with gusts of up to 50 km/h expected for much of the day. Wednesday will begin with flurries before they taper off as temperatures rise above 0 C.
