Weekend closure of MacKay Bridge to begin Friday night

Drivers planning to cross Halifax Harbour this weekend will need to make alternate plans, as the MacKay Bridge is set to close for the entire weekend.

Halifax Harbour Bridges says the span will shut down Friday at 8 p.m. and remain closed until 5:30 a.m. Monday for lane reconfiguration, cable inspections, and lighting upgrades at the Victoria Road interchange.

When the bridge reopens, drivers will encounter a new alignment through the former toll plaza area, with a reduced speed limit of 50 km/h as work continues.

Both ramps at the Victoria Road interchange will be closed during the weekend shutdown. Beginning Monday, the Princess Margaret off-ramp to Dartmouth will be closed for six weeks, while the Dartmouth-to-Halifax on-ramp remains closed for another six weeks.

The Macdonald Bridge will remain open throughout the closure. However, commercial vehicles over 3,200 kilograms are still prohibited from using the span, unless they are passenger buses.
