Halifax ranks 3rd for worst traffic in Canada

It would not come as a surprise to most that Vancouver and Toronto take the top two spots for worst traffic in Canada, but the third city on the podium is a bit more shocking.

Halifax Regional Municipality comes in just behind Toronto, taking the bronze medal in a competition it probably was not hoping to win.

The ranking comes from the 2024 TomTom Traffic Index, a company that analyzes traffic information across the globe. Cities are ranked based on the average time it takes to travel 10 kilometres in the city centre.

In Halifax, that number is 24 minutes, up 50 seconds from 2023. It is compared to 25 minutes in Toronto and 27 minutes in Vancouver.

On average, Haligonians spent 83 hours in rush hour traffic in 2024, the equivalent of three and a half days.

Despite Halifax being considered a fairly walkable city with a strong public transportation system, construction and the growing pains of expansion have put a damper on individual vehicle travel.
