Illegal cannabis storefront search prompts small protest

Two detachments from the RCMP worked together to execute a search warrant at an illegal cannabis storefront that led to the arrest of one man.

According to a press release, officers from Colchester County and Millbrook searched a storefront on Willow Street under the Cannabis Act. At the property, police arrested one man who was later released and not charged.

However, police said they do anticipate other people will face charges while the evidence collected during the warrant is looked at. On July 30, police found a quantity of illegal cannabis and unstamped tobacco at the store.

While officers were at the property, a small group of protesters gathered outside. Police said that there was no incidents reported.

The investigation continues.

Cannabis is popular in Nova Scotia

Officials are reminding people the only way to access cannabis legally is through provincially licensed locations.

Since legalization, Nova Scotians have been steadily consuming the drug. Demand can be seen in the rise of sales.

Wastewater tested in Halifax in 2023 contained almost twice the amount of cannabis metabolites compared with samples taken from other big cities in Canada, like Toronto or Montreal.

The results are from a survey conducted in November 2023 by Statistics Canada, which tracked various drug metabolites in the wastewater in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Vancouver.

In Halifax, the survey found 748 milligrams of THC metabolites per 1,000 people per day — well above the 448 milligrams average among the surveyed cities. THC is the compound in cannabis that causes the drug’s psychoactive effects.
