Halifax names acting Chief Administrative Officer

Halifax Regional Council has appointed the soon-to-be acting Chief Administrative Officer for the municipality.

In a media release on Wednesday, municipal staff say Brad Anguish will take on the role of CAO on an interim basis. He will assume the role on Sept. 8.

“We are at a pivotal point for the future of the municipality,” says Mayor Andy Fillmore. “Mr. Anguish’s long history of public service, including at the executive level of many of our operational business units, will ensure the delivery of many major projects and initiatives under his leadership.”

Anguish is described as a professional engineer who attended the Royal Military College of Canada for engineering and earned a masters in business administration from St. Mary’s University.

The appointment comes as current CAO Cathie O’Toole prepares to step down from the role. The municipality says O’Toole will stay on until Oct. 17 to allow for transition.

As for a permanent CAO, the municipality says it will not begin that search until there is “more clarity from the Province of Nova Scotia regarding possible legislative changes that will impact the role.”

That statement comes amid rumours the provincial government could institute so-called “strong mayor powers” during the fall sitting of the legislature, set to begin later this month.
