Mooseheads drop season opener to Charlottetown

The Halifax Mooseheads took a hit Friday night, falling to the Charlottetown Islanders in the regular-season opener.
The game was in Charlottetown, the first of a home-and-home between the clubs to open the season.
The Islanders started strong, giving the home crowd lots to cheer about.
Falmouth, N.S. native William Shields scored two goals in the first period to give Charlottetown the early lead. The Islanders added another goal early in the second period, nabbing a commanding 3-0 lead.
Halifax would respond a short time later, as new Moosehead Jasu Mensonen scored the team’s first goal of the new season. The Mooseheads failed to convert on a four-minute double minor penalty later in the second period.
The Islanders answered with a quick strike just 26 seconds into the third period off the stick of Matthew Butler.
Charlottetown held on for a 4-1 win.
Halifax will be back in action on Saturday evening for the home opener at Scotiabank Centre. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
