Mandatory evacuation order expanded as Kings County wildfire grows

A mandatory evacuation order has been expanded for areas impacted, as a wildfire in Kings County moves into a populated area.

An emergency alert was sent out at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday. The following are being asked to leave the area immediately:

  • Aylesford Rd from (and including) Fox Mountain Campground to Civic 3847 Aylesford Rd
  • All civics on Spruce Dr, Birch Lane and Blue Lane
  • All civics between 5 North River Rd to 1493 North River Rd

Residents in those areas must evacuate immediately as an emergency reception centre has been established at Louis Millett Centre in New Minas. This is in addition to the 275 addresses evacuated on Tuesday. The quick action from crews started on Monday as the Lake George fire went from held to out of control in a matter of hours due to drought and wind.

In an update Wednesday morning, the Department of Natural Resources said the wildfire is roughly 290 hectares.

Four planes from the Northwest Territories, three helicopters, one from DNR and two contracted, and 18 pieces of heavy machinery are in the area.

Local fire crews are on scene putting up structure protection. The blaze was two kilometres away from homes on the north end of Lake George on Tuesday afternoon. There are no reports of damage, the update from DNR reads.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Jim Rudderham, director of fleet and forest protection with DNR, said officials are “confident” the blaze was ignited by a person.

“Our conservation officers visited the area before activity picked up, but there was not enough evidence to determine the exact cause,” he said. “It is quite frustrating for us when this happens, but it happens quite often that we can’t hold anyone to account.
