New patient records and profiles system launching in 2026

The province says that Nova Scotia Patients will soon benefit from faster, better coordinated care when the “One Person, One Record” system comes online at IWK Health.

The government made the announcement on Thursday, and said the service will be launched at IWK on Dec. 6 and implemented provincewide at Nova Scotia Health by the end of 2026.

“Implementing One Person One Record, at IWK, is a significant step toward delivering safter more connected care for patients and families, its part of the transformation of how we deliver healthcare,” Michelle Thomson, Minister of Health and Wellness, said.

During the transition at IWK, there will be some temporary staffing adjustments and patients and families may notice slightly longer wait times, but safe, high-quality care will be delivered through this period, the press release reads.

The system is designed to securely collect, store, and share health information and will eventually replace or connect many current systems that healthcare professionals use every day to record and view patient information.

IWK healthcare workers will have access to a patient’s complete profile, and this will prevent duplication and unnecessary tests and ensure timely decision-making.

Staff will receive in-person and virtual training and 24/7 in-person, on-site clinical and technical support before, during, and after the implementation.

“Implementing One Person One Record at IWK is a significant step toward delivering safer, more connected care for patients and families,” Scott McKenna, Chief Information Officer at Nova Scotia Health and IWK Health, said. “This system ensures providers and teams have the information they need, all in one location, so they can provide the best possible patient care.”

Once fully implemented, the system will bring together information from across Nova Scotia Health and IWK Sites, and it will be accessible to more than 26,000 provincial healthcare professionals.
