Winter parking ban to remain in effect as snow keeps falling

The overnight winter parking ban will be enforced for a second night in the Halifax area with snow expected to continue into Tuesday morning.

That parking ban means no on-street parking is allowed between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., to allow crews to properly clear streets and sidewalks.

“Vehicles must be off municipal streets during the hours noted above,” the notice states. “Regardless of the status of an overnight winter parking ban, or whether you have received a notification, vehicles can be towed, day or night, at any time of year, if they are interfering with snow-clearing operations, as per Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act.”

Vehicles can be ticketed that are obstructing sidewalk clearing. Such obstacles prevent crews from clearing and can caused accessibility issues for pedestrians.

According to HRP, 507 winter parking ban tickets were issued overnight, and 11 vehicles were seized for impeding snow removal.

More information on municipal winter operations can be found on the municipality’s website.
