It’s a big weekend for Halifax sports fans, but there is one event that should not be overlooked.
Every year, CheerExpo, the largest cheerleading competition in Atlantic Canada, draws thousands to the region. Starting this Saturday at the Halifax Exhibition Centre, the two-day event will feature 122 teams in competition, with 86 of them from as far away as Alberta.
CheerExpo’s key organizer says previous fiscal assessments on the event have shown it brings in more than $7 million a year to the Halifax area.
Laura Mar says that’s not just participants from out of town, either.
“Cheerleading is very much a spectator sport,” she says. “It’s awesome to come and watch. It’s not two teams against each other; there are divisions and all the teams are against all those other teams and it is really about who can put on the best show.”
With young qualifying athletes advancing to go to Florida for the World Championships, Mar says this weekend’s event should be exciting.
She says admission is $35 for the weekend or people can purchase a one day pass for $25.
