Macdonald Bridge set to close for maintenance this weekend

Commuters in Halifax are being asked to plan ahead as the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge is set to shut down this weekend.

Halifax Harbour Bridges says starting Friday evening, the cross-harbour span will close to all vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

The closure will take effect at 8 p.m. and remain closed until Monday at 5:30 a.m.

HHB says free transit tickets will be available at its administration building at 125 Wyse Rd., for cyclists or pedestrians impacted, but the tickets are limited to four per person.

The MacKay Bridge will remain open during the Macdonald closure, but higher traffic volumes should be expected.

Drivers are urged to plan ahead and take alternative options when possible.

The bridge authority says the closure is necessary as crews make preparations to begin phase two of Project LifeSpan.

That project is a two-year, $70-million preservation initiative by HHB to rehabilitate the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge towers.
