Municipalities must own 100 per cent of renewable energy projects

The rules have changed for municipalities in Nova Scotia that want to get in on renewable energy projects.

The community feed-in tariff program encourages community-owned projects by guaranteeing a price per megawatt hour.

Municipalities were initially told they had to own 51 per cent of a project to qualify, but turns out that violated the Municipal Government Act.

They must now own 100 per cent.

In response, the government says it will extend funding through the municipal finance corporation, giving municipalities access to capital at low rates.
