Over 950 impaired drivers caught so far this year in Nova Scotia

Today marks the fourth annual National Impaired Driving Enforcement Day and Mounties have set up a series of coordinated checkpoints throughout the province.

So far this year, RCMP say they have caught 969 people for impaired driving-related incidents in Nova Scotia.

They say 591 people were impaired by alcohol, 58 by drugs and they have issued 378 administrative suspensions, which they say is when drivers lose their license for being over the legal impairment limit.

“We are not proud of these numbers because it means over 950 people chose to get behind the wheel and put their lives and the lives of others in danger,” Inspector Berni Chapman of the RCMP Traffic Services said.

Citizens who spot a someone behind the wheel who they believed are impaired are asked to call 911 and report the location and a description of the driver and vehicle.

Chapman said he has heard many excuses from impaired drivers, and has had to see the consequences first hand.

“I can tell you that no excuse makes it easier for an impaired driver to live with the fact that they killed innocent people,” added Insp. Chapman.
