Third victim in house fire deemed a homicide

RCMP have determined that a third victim in a deadly house fire earlier this week was a victim of homicide.

“Given the condition of the body, investigators believe it will take some time before the identity will be known,” Sgt. Alain LeBlanc wrote in a news release.

A man charged with two counts of murder related to the house fire on Old Guysborough Road made a brief appearance in Dartmouth provincial court on Friday.

Codey Reginald Hennigar of Wyses Corner wore a red fleece jacket and looked down at his hands as he sat on the prisoner’s bench.

RCMP charged the 30-year-old Friday in connection with the deaths of two people found in the house fire, 81-year-old Clifford William Ward and 54-year-old Mildred Anne Ward, both of Wyses Corner.

Hennigar was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Jan. 30.

Halifax Fire Deputy Chief Roy Hollett said at the height of the fire, about 10 engines and 30 firefighters were on scene.

According to RCMP, Hennigar was taken into custody at about 12:45 a.m. Thursday morning after he rammed two police vehicles with a car in the Milford area, about a half-hour drive from the scene.

Fire and emergency crews were sent to the home in a rural, wooded area about 25 kilometres northeast of Halifax Stanfield International Airport. around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
