Mooseheads sweep Moncton Wildcats with 5-4 OT win

Brent Andrews was the overtime hero in a game where the Halifax Mooseheads had to come from behind to end the best-of-seven series with the Moncton Wildcats.

The Wildcats stormed out to a 3-0 first period lead, going 2-for-2 on their powerplay and goaltender Roman Will made several nice saves including a pair of back-to-back beauties on Andrew Ryan and Martin Frk who were both in close.

Marek Hrivik got the Moose on the board six minutes in and Patrick Delisle-Houde added two of his own. Blueliner Konrad Abeltshauser ripped one home from the point on the powerplay with under a minute to go in the first to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Mooseheads got within one early in the second when rookie Jonathan Drouin banged in his fourth of the playoffs a rebound. Samuel Roussy answered a few minutes later for the Wildcats to reinstate the two goal lead.

The third period was the Mooseheads, the entire team looked like they were on a mission and it started with a goal by Martin Frk who dangled through the Wildcats zone before ripping one of his trademark shots past Will. And then with nine minutes to go Nathan MacKinnon found the puck, went coast-to-coast and tied the game up.

Then just four minutes into the first overtime Brent Andrews buried a centring pass from captain Cameron Critchlow to end the series.

The Moncton rink had a loud contingent of Mooseheads fans who made the trip. The group of fans could be heard chanting “Go Moose Go” long after the series-ending goal.

The Mooseheads now await their second round opponent. That series will not begin until next Friday. The most likely opponent as it stands now is the Quebec Rempart.
