Spinster: Andrea Dorfman’s love letter to Halifax

By Steve Gow

Halifax-based filmmaker Andrea Dorfman's latest movie was supposed to come out in theatres, but with the pandemic shutting cinemas for months, Spinster is now being released on such platforms as iTunes Canada instead.

In the quirky comedy, Brooklyn-99 star Chelsea Peretti plays Gaby, a wedding caterer who goes on a dating rampage after being dumped on her 40th birthday. However, as she embarks on her dating spree, she also embarks on a journey of self-discovery.

“I think a story about somebody who is alone, at this time, could really resonate and connect and be affirming,” said Dorfman, who says the pandemic may provide new context for the movie – filmed before the outbreak.

Dorfmann also says her fourth feature film is a love letter to Halifax.

Originally from Toronto, Dorfman moved to the province nearly 30 years ago after coming to attend art school.

“For me, Halifax and why I've chosen to stay here – it's just an incredible city,” said Dorfman. “That is why so many people come here to shoot films – it's beautiful and unique.”

Dorfman largely shot the film in and around the city but there was another favourite location that the local filmmaker decided to showcase in Spinster as well.

“It's so stunning and gorgeous, I really wanted to be able to show a section of coastline near Peggys Cove,” said Dorfman.

“It's a place where I often hike and have hiked over the years with my partner and his kids and our dog so that was important for me to fit in.”

Spinster will be available on iTunes Canada and Vimeo on Demand starting August 7.
