Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Fair moves online during COVID-19

By Meghan Groff

Every year students in Grades 4 to 9 participate in the Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Fair.

The event featuring heritage and history-themed projects is generally held over two days in June at Saint Mary's University and includes educational workshops, awards and a public showcase.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, that can't happen this year, but the fair is going ahead online.

“The students have worked so hard on their projects,” said fair coordinator and SMU history Dr. Kirrily Freeman.

“Many of them were ready to present at school fairs or regional fairs in late March and early April, so the closures came right at the time they were gearing up for their big presentations and we wanted to give them the platform they missed out on.”

Freeman told NEWS 95.7's The Sheldon MacLeod Show, those interested can submit 2 or 3 photos of their projects along with captions to kirrily.freeman@smu.ca before June 1. Parents will also need to fill out a consent form.

Rather than students placing in first, second or third, there will be a variety of prizes according to subject areas and project strengths.

“It's a very difficult decision for the judges because these projects are so inspiring, these students are so hardworking and they're so engaged, so excited about their projects,” Freeman explained.

“Mostly we just want to celebrate the work they've done, rather than try to rank everybody.”

Members of the public can check out the projects throughout the month of June on the Nova Scotia Provincial Heritage Fair Instagram page.
