New Brunswick lowers age for second COVID booster as Omicron variants cause concern

FREDERICTON — Health officials in New Brunswick are lowering the minimum age of eligibility for second COVID-19 boosters to 18 from 50.
They say residents 18 and over can obtain a second booster of COVID-19 vaccine if at least five months have passed since their third shot.
The expanded eligibility comes as officials are warning that there are signs New Brunswick is at the start of a period of heightened virus activity.
Chief medical officer of health Dr. Jennifer Russell says the number of daily COVID-19 cases in the province is increasing, adding that new cases involve the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of the Omicron mutation.
Those two variants are causing the number of daily cases to rise in other parts of the country, including Quebec and Ontario.
Officials are also reporting four more COVID-19-related deaths from last week.
