Don’t toss your old phones: How to recycle electronics in Nova Scotia

By Mark Hodgins

You know what to do with your paper and pop bottles – but how do you recycle that old cell-phone gathering dust in your junk drawer?

Don't scrap that flip phone just yet.

Gerard MacLellan is the program director for the Electronic Products Recycling Association.

He says the group is encouraging all Nova Scotians to recycle their old devices instead of just tossing them in the trash.

“They can drop off their old electronics at any one of our 62 locations across the province, and we'll take care of them and make sure they're properly recylced,” said MacLellan.

He says for items with data, like computer harddrives, people should make sure to wipe all files before getting rid of it.

Once you drop off your electronics, they'll bring it to a centre where parts are seperated, and recycle between 90 and 95 per cent of all items collected.

MacLellan says after that's done they'll be made into new products.

You can visit recyclemyelectronics.ca to find out where you can give your old devices new life.
