Emera Oval to open for winter season in January

By Chris Stoodley

Halifax's Emera Oval is set to open for the winter season in two weeks.

If weather and ice conditions allow, the Emera Oval will be open for ice skating starting Jan. 4.

Due to COVID-19, the Emera Oval will have reduced capacity and skaters must pre-register for free public skate times at halifax.ca/myREC or by phone at 902-490-6666. People can pre-register two days in advance starting at 8:30 a.m. each day.

Public skate times have been reduced to one hour. People are asked to arrive no earlier than 20 minutes before one's registered time.

There will be no group or school bookings this season. The indoor warming room is also not available this season.

“Free equipment loans, including skates and helmets, will be available in limited quantities,” says a news release. “Equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis. Skaters are encouraged to bring their own equipment, where possible. CSA-approved multi-impact hockey helmets are mandatory for all children 12 year of age and under.  Others are encouraged to wear a helmet, for their own safety.”

At 55,000 square feet of ice (the same as three NHL hockey rinks), the Emera Oval is the largest artificial ice surface east of Quebec. It'll be open for free daily public skates throughout the winter.

People can check the calendar, book a time, check events and find the latest information on Halifax's website. People can also call 902-490-2347 or follow Parks & Recreation on Facebook and Twitter.

NOTE: This story was corrected after HRM sent an updated phone number to call to pre-register for free public skate times.
