The RCMP said the call came in around 9:50 a.m. that the device was found near Oak Avenue and Fales River Drive. As a precaution, police cordoned off the area and began evacuating people immediately, and those that could not be evacuated were told to shelter in place.

A short time later, the Mounties brought in the Explosives Disposal Unit, who began examining the device. That investigation determined that the device was not a bomb. The suspicious device was, in fact, a container used as a Geocache.

Police determined that no explosives were part of the device, which is used for the popular activity of Geocaching(RCMP Photo)

Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity where participants use GPS and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches,” at specific locations marked by coordinates worldwide.

Once the device was determined not to be a danger, police re-opened closed streets in the area and allowed residents who had evacuated to return to their homes.

Police are asking people who leave containers as part of Geocaching to ensure they do not look like explosive devices.

No injuries were reported.
