Thick smoke was visible in the south end Thursday as a historic building on Coburg Road was damaged by fire.
Crews responded to the Waegwoltic Club around 1:30 yesterday with pictures on social media showing flames shooting through the roof of the building.
“At one point last night the building collapsed in on itself and that’s extremely dangerous,” Halifax Fire deputy chief Roy Hollett said on Friday morning. “Unfortunately the Waeg is gone.”
This was the second fire at the building after a fire in April. Hollett said the cause of the fire in April was undetermined.
“With this damage, it’s going to be a challenge for the investigators to determine what caused it,” said Hollett. “The damage was so severe that we had to take the building – what was left of it – down.”
The member’s-only club opened in 1908.
