Mooseheads head home after a disappointing road trip in Quebec

The Halifax Mooseheads were in Sherbrooke on Sunday, wrapping up their first Quebec road trip of the season, taking on the Phoenix. The Herd entered the afternoon game looking for their first win in Quebec this season after falling to the Shawinigan Cataractes on Friday 8-1 and the Victoriaville Tigres 4-3 on Saturday.

The Phoenix lit the lamp early in the game, Hugo Marcil sending a shot from the point past Jack Milner. However, the goal was subject to a review after Charles-Antoine Beauregard made contact with the Moosehead netminder. Shortly after, the goal was disallowed, leaving the game scoreless.

Chad Bellemare opened the scoring for the Phoenix 12:33 into the 1st period, snapping a one-timer off Éloi Bourdeau’s saucer pass past Milner and giving the Phoenix an early 1-0 lead.

The 2nd period began with a fight, as just 2:42 into the frame, Jake Todd and Éloi Bourdeau dropped the gloves, ending the night for both players, after Bourdeau collided with Todd along the boards. A wrestling match began and quickly devolved into a fight. Sherbrooke captain Olivier Dubois kept the pressure for the Phoenix, unloading a shot from the faceoff circle and beating Milner on the glove side 3:39 into the 2nd period to widen Sherbrooke’s lead on the powerplay.  The Phoenix continued their onslaught, scoring twice in less than a minute. Maxime Côté with the first 10:45 into the 2nd period, and Justin Lemay scored only 53 seconds later.

Olivier Dubois netted his second of the game 4:04 into the final frame, jamming the puck past Milner to extend the Sherbrooke lead to five. Hugo Primeau picked up his second assist of the game on the play. The Unrelenting Phoenix added another with less than five minutes left in the contest, Thomas Rousseau beating Milner on the glove side. Halifax defender Jack Martin put the Herd on the board with his 4th goal of the season 16:19 into the third period, beating Sherbrooke goaltender Linards Feldbergs. Sherbrooke Captain Olivier Dubois received first-star honours with his two-goal effort, Hugo Primeau earned a second star, and Maxime Côté received a third star.

The Mooseheads will return to Halifax 0-3 on their first Quebec road trip, falling 6-1 against Sherbrooke. With the loss, the Mooseheads’ record falls to 7-6-2, and Sherbrooke improves to 9-4-0. The Herd will be back in action at the Scotiabank Centre on Friday, Nov. 1st, as they welcome the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies.
