The Halifax Mooseheads hosted former Moosehead Reece Peitzsche and the Shawinigan Cataractes at the Scotiabank Centre Thursday night for the teams’ second and last meeting of the season. The Herd aims to tie the season series after Shawinigan took the first game last month with a dominant 8-1 win.
The deadlock finally broke halfway through the second period as Olivier Beaulieu scored his 1st QMJHL goal after coming to the league from the Chilliwack Chiefs of the BCHL earlier this season, giving Shawinigan the first lead of the game.
Shawinigan continued their onslaught late in the second period, scoring two in less than a minute. Félix Lacerte fired a laser past Rousseau with 3:43 left in the second period; Vince Elie and Bedford native Cole Chandler were credited with the assists on the goal. Chad Lygitsakos added another, assisted by Louis-Philippe Fontaine, to increase the Cataractes’ lead to three.
Matvei Gridin added another goal shorthanded for Shawinigan, sniping a shot high and past Rousseau 11:49 into the final period of action.
Shawinigan picked up their 12th win of the season, shutting out the Mooseheads 4-0. With the loss the Mooseheads fall to 9-11-3 on the season. Mattias Rousseau made 29 saves in the losing effort for Halifax.
More bad news for the Herd as Cade Moser left the contest with an upper-body injury.
The first star was awarded to Cataractes centre Chad Lygitsakos, the second star went to Matvei Gridin, and the third to Mooseheads defender Owen Philips.
The Herd are back in action Friday, Nov. 22nd, as they take on the Cape Breton Eagles at the Centre 200 at 7 p.m. You can catch all the action on 95.7 News Radio.
