Over $30K worth of Maud Lewis artwork stolen from Halifax home

Police in Halifax say three peices of art from a famed Nova Scotia artist have been stolen from a home.

The works, each described as a framed Christmas card by Maud Lewis, were reported stolen to police on November 25 from a home on Cambridge Street in the city’s south end.

Halifax Regional Police told 95.7 NewsRadio the theft is believed to have happened between November 21 and 24.

Lewis, known as “Canada’s folk artist”, was born in South Ohio, near Yarmouth, in 1903. She went on to gain international attention for her cheerful, often nature-focused artwork in the mid-1960’s before she died in 1970. Many of her works are now displayed at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in downtown Halifax.

“The cards are approximately 7″ x 5″ in size,” Halifax Regional Police wrote in a media release. “The cards are matted and framed and each believed to be valued in excess of ten thousand dollars.”

Police say no suspect has been identified as of yet, but investigators believe the crime was committed by someone known to the homeowners.
