Lower Sackville named a finalist for Kraft Hockeyville 2025

A local community has been named one of the finalists for Kraft Hockeyville 2025.

Lower Sackville is one of four finalists, with the winning community receiving $250,000 for arena upgrades and the chance to host an NHL pre-season game.

The Sackville Arena, home of the Sackville Flyers, has been a hub for the community for more than 50 years, but locals say the aging facility no longer has enough room to support the growing demand for ice time. The prize money could go toward adding a second ice pad at the arena.

“Stories of passion and perseverance have poured in from every corner of Canada, showing the vital role arenas play in uniting communities,” Simon Laroche, President, Kraft Heinz Canada, said in a press release. “For 19 years and counting, this program has allowed us to connect with hockey fans nationwide and highlight their stories.”

If Sackville wins, the arena says the money would be used to build a second ice pad, help alleviate scheduling conflicts and upgrade older infrastructure.

Cher R. notes in their rally note on the Kraft Hockeyville website that the tight-knit community would benefit immensely from the money.

“Not only is it a place to learn how to skate and play hockey, it’s a place to forge friendships, stay active, while making memories and keeping the community connected,” they said. “We get to watch our children play a sport they love, build strong ties in the community while developing discipline, resilience and a strong sense of belonging. That is why the Sackville Arena is important to me.”

The other finalists are Crossfield, Alta.; Honeywood, Ont.; and Saint-Boniface, Que.

The three runner-ups will still receive $25,000 for upgrades and $10,000 in new hockey equipment.

Voting runs from April 4 at 10 a.m. until April 5 at 6 p.m.

The winner will be revealed live on Hockey Night in Canada the night of April 5.
