Police laid charges against a man who was defrauding seniors through a renovation and repair scam.
Between July 8 and Aug. 18, police responded to four reports of a man approaching seniors at their homes and offering to complete small renovation or repair jobs. The victims would pay a deposit, but the man would not return to complete the service.
In some incidents, officials said the suspect asked people for more cash advances to cover materials and permits.
The suspect would also give the victims fake receipts that were signed with a fake name.
On Sept. 15, Halifax Regional Police arrested James Robert Dwyer, 65, in connection with the case.
He is facing charges of:
- Fraud under $5,000 (x4)
- Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (x4)
- Mislead police by diverting suspicion
- Fraudulent or misleading receipt
Police say that Dwyer has been convicted of similar crimes in Newfoundland.
The case is still open and officers are investigating.
