Consider spreading the love this year by donating to your local animal shelter, which may allow a furry companion to stay with their loved ones.
Recognizing the growing cost-of-living crisis, the Halifax Humane Society has begun operating an animal resource centre to eliminate some of the barriers Haligonians face in keeping their pets happy, healthy and at home.
“We know now that surrender is rarely what people want. Most families love their pets deeply and simply need help, guidance, or time,” the humane society said.
When financial hardship, an unexpected vet bill, or a changing housing situation hits, oftentimes the only option has been to surrender your furry friend.
“Today, Halifax Humane Society is focused on meeting families where they are — without judgment — and working together to find solutions that keep pets in their homes whenever possible,” they say.
The Admissions Department is now the Animal Resource Center, representing a shift from a place people surrender their pets, to a place they go for help.
“The Animal Resource Center reflects a broader evolution in animal welfare,” the humane society says. “Modern humane organizations are no longer measured solely by how many animals they take in, but by how effectively they help animals never need to enter the shelter at all.”
The society is now offering programs including pet food pantry assistance, training and behaviour support, and access to veterinary care.
“The Animal Resource Center is not just a new name,” it notes. “It is a reflection of who we are becoming: a place of help, hope, and solutions — for pets and the people who love them.”
