Capital Health is throwing out 160 mattresses from the QEII Health sciences centre, after it was discovered they are full of mould.
Spokesperson John Gillis tells News 95.7 the slip covers aren’t easy to puncture, but when they do, that’s when the mould can get it and start to grow.
“In any case that there is some sort of breach or hole in the cover there is the risk of this happening, I don’t think it’s unheard of in a hospital setting where we have a lot of mattresses in heavy use,” explains Gillis.
He says this mould was discovered when someone was changing one of the covers.
“There would be checks, but not on a particular schedule, or system,” adds Gillis.
He says after this incident, there will be changes, and a schedule will be set to check on the beds more often.
Gillis adds they didn’t test the mould, but it’s believed to be fairly run of the mill, and they don’t believe anyone got sick from it.
