Rare blue lobster in Halifax

A rare blue lobster is temporarily living at Dalhousie University from.

Named Sylvia, the lobster was discovered in Lingan, Cape Breton over the weekend.

“She’s beautiful,” said Shirley Rockett, owner of the lobster pound. “You know the old, blue china? She has that kind of colour and pattern to her.”

After staying in Halifax for a few months, the 2 1/4 pound lobster will live the rest of her life at an aquarium Toronto’s CN Tower. The blue colouring comes from extensive amount of protein.

“Over the past 20 years I’ve been working with lobsters, I’ve never seen a blue one.” adds Rockett. “A lot of people have seen blue lobsters, but not this kind of blue.”

The chances of catching a blue lobster are one in two million. To add the rarity, an even rarer albino lobster was found in the same area a few weeks ago. The chances of seeing one of those is one in a hundred million.
