Speed restrictions aimed to protect right whales lifted by Transport Canada

By CityNews Halifax Staff

The Canadian Government has reversed speed restrictions set in place aimed to protect the endangered North Atlantic right whales.

This comes after an extensive surveillance program from Transport Canada monitoring the area.

It was determined after 240 flight hours that no North Atlantic right whales were spotted in the lanes.

In a statement, the government says “in order to encourage vessel traffic in areas where no North Atlantic right whales have been spotted, vessels will once again be able to maximize efficient routes to transit through the Gulf.”

Transport Canada adds it is prepared to adjust closures and speed restrictions if more whales are spotted in certain areas.
