African Heritage Month is coming up and the province officially unveiled the poster Wednesday for this year's theme.
Executive director of the Black Cultural Centre, Russell Grosse, said The Ties that Bind: Faith, Family and Community features a three-fold knot in the shape of a heart symbolizing strength and resiliency.
“This theme is about celebrating the long-standing legacy of faith and spirituality, acknowledging strong family ties and honouring the togetherness of the African Nova Scotian community,” he said.
Gosse said African Nova Scotians, African Canadians and people of African descent make up a unique history that spans centuries.
“February, African Heritage Month, is a time to share, educate and discover our similarities, our values and what makes us diverse,” he explained.
A number of events are planned throughout February to mark the month.
On Thursday, Canada Post will unveil a stamp honouring the Colored Hockey Championship.
The stamp tells the story of all-Black hockey in the Maritimes between 1895 and the early 1930s.
