‘Be prepared for outages,’ says Nova Scotia Power spokesperson ahead of Tuesday’s winter storm

HALIFAX – Be prepared for some power outages.

That's the message from Nova Scotia Power, as Tuesday will see the province hit with its third winter storm in just five days.

Lunenburg, Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby and Annapolis counties are under a winter storm warning as of Monday afternoon. Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for the rest of the province, including Halifax.

The utility is already making preparations ahead of time, deciding to activate its Emergency Operations Centre at 8 p.m. on Monday.

“We are advising customers that we do expect power outages across the province as a result of this impending storm,” said Tiffany Chase, spokesperson for Nova Scotia Power.

Chase said they will have crews scattered throughout the province as they get ready for Tuesday.

“We will have all of our Nova Scotia Power power line crews and forestry teams prepared to respond to this storm,” she said. “We're also reaching out for contractor crews. We already have some contractor crews from New Brunswick who will be trying to assist us with restoration efforts.”

Chase recommends residents make some preparations ahead of time.

“They should have an emergency kit with flashlights, a battery powered radio, fresh water, charge your electronic devices in advance of the storm, and also making sure if you do have a backup generator, that it's installed properly outdoors.”
